Originally from New Orleans, Dr. Asad relocated to South Africa with his wife and two sons in 2022. He now leads the Diaspora Project at the African Center for the Study of the United States at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Dr. Asad curates immersive ten-day travel experiences for those seeking to explore the rich and complex history of Johannesburg. Designed to be both culturally expansive and deeply engaging, these programs offer participants an opportunity to connect with the city’s past and present in meaningful ways.

Experiences are available three times a year — in March, July, and December.

African Centre for the Study of the U.S.

The African Centre for the Study of the United States (ACSUS) at the University of the Witwatersrand is a leading academic research hub dedicated to advancing Africa–U.S. relations. In addition to hosting academic conferences and producing journal publications, the Centre organizes study abroad programs for American university students, fostering meaningful cross-cultural exchange.

As part of its Diaspora Project, ACSUS created OneWaySA — a resource designed to assist Americans interested in visiting or relocating to South Africa. Through this initiative, the Centre extends its mission beyond academia, offering practical guidance and cultural insights to help individuals and families make a smooth transition.
